“The average women is operating with an emotional support deficit. She gives more emotional support to her romantic partner than she receives from him”

When there are tension and conflict in relationships, there’s no chance of getting any emotional support from our partners. The sad truth is most women won’t reach out to others for a source of support for fear of judgment or feeling like she’s failed at making her relationship work.

As women when our emotional needs are not getting met from our partners we hold back our negative feelings and thoughts that might threaten the relationship. This may work temporarily but in the long run, it puts women at risk for depression.

Being able to manage your emotions when you're overwhelmed will reduce the tension and help you communicate more effectively and revisit the conflict with a sense of clarity.

At the end of the day having someone we trust for help and emotional support is important to us. We are not always encouraged to go outside of our relationships to talk. And for some, our relatives and friends are not the next best source of support.

We want to have someone we can count on, talk openly with and who will understand our point of view. But we don’t always have access or the resources for the support we need.

If a woman just has one person she can count on, she is more likely to be protected from experiencing depression. Thankfully, our partners are not the only ones that can be our confidante in time of need.

Here’s what I know for sure:

  • We get angry yet are too polite to address the lack of emotional support we are not getting from our partners And
  • It’s necessary for our emotional and mental well being to have space to explore and formulate our thoughts, questions, and feelings when conflict arises in our relationships.
